Waxed Cotton Care

Suitable care and handling of your waxed cotton garment will ensure its endurance. Waxed cotton, or oilskin, is a unique high-performance fabric. It is made by knitting 2-ply cotton yarn into a strong canvas fabric, which is then preserved with a trademarked mixture of micro and technical waxes. This oil/wax treatment creates a highly sturdy wind and water blockade, while retaining the breathability of the cotton.

Cleaning

Consistent cleaning enhances the look of your garments and removes dust and dirt that can cause untimely wear. Regular cleaning also stops dirt build-up from becoming irremovable marks.

Please follow the below guidelines for your garment:

  • Eliminate dried mud, sand, and grit as quickly as possible, especially along inner sleeve seams as these are rough.
  • Rinse or sponge wipe with cold water only. If dirt is ground in, gently brush it off with a soft bristled brush and then rinse.
  • Hang to dry naturally for at least 24 hours in a dry, well-ventilated area.
  • Reproof the entire garment after cleaning.
Rewaxing/Reproofing

Most waxed cotton garments will need consistent reproofing within a year if worn frequently, or even sooner if you notice that the coat is drying out due to exposure to the elements. Uneven, shiny or dry areas, or where wetness no longer beads, is a good indicator to reproof those specific areas. It is not essential to reproof the entire garment except it has been washed.

By reproofing your waxed cotton jacket, you can bring back its original water-resistant finish. On top of prolonging the life of your jacket, reproofing will also revive the fabric's colour and help to prevent holes from forming along the joints of your jacket. Garments can be as good as new with an easy application of reproofing wax.

Please follow below guidelines for your garment:

  • Make sure that the garment is clean and dry. Lay it on a flat surface and apply the wax sparingly with a soft, lint-free cotton cloth.
  • Try using a hair dryer to warm the wax on the cloth and on the garment as you apply it. This will make the application easier and more uniform.
  • Spread the wax evenly, working it into the fabric in a circular motion. Do not coat the surface too thickly or it will not be able to absorb it all. Seams and worn areas will require more wax.
  • Wipe off extra wax and hang garment to dry overnight in a well-ventilated area.
  • The next day, spread out any excess oil not absorbed. Apply additional wax to areas that still appear shiny or dry.
Storage

To ensure the durability of your wax cotton coat or jacket, always be sure to hang it in a well-ventilated area. Dried mud, sand, grit and dirt should be removed as soon as possible, as it will have a rough effect on the waxed cotton. Items stored not completely dried or stored in a humid area may well develop mildew. Once stored, regularly inspect your garment for mildew or a mildew-indicating smell to prevent damage to your garment.
Hang, roll or fold your garment in a cool, dry and well-ventilated space.

Important Guide

Evade contact between waxed cotton and pale-colour leather car seats. As a safeguard only we endorse that you do not wear garments on seats for the first couple of weeks after purchase or after reproofing. Once the natural weathering process begins, the garment will feel dryer and softer and it will then be safe to continue for normal use.

Leather Care

Proper care and treatment of your leather garment safeguards durability. Durable and flexible, leather is created by tanning animal skin, often cattle hide. We take pride in the craftsmanship of our leather pieces and our signature leather handling uses only the premium materials. J.L.I produced leather garments in a wide variety of types and styles, leather can be decorated which are finished using a variety of techniques and finishes, including our trademark hand waxing.

Cleaning

Proper care and treatment of your leather garment will not only improve the appearance but will also ensure its endurance.

Please follow below guide to clean your garment:

  1. Using a soft brush, gently brush to remove any dust.
  2. Clean your jacket using cold water and neutral soap (without any chemicals). With a sponge, gently wipe down the outside of the jacket. Avoid using hot water. Do not apply to any areas with fur as this will detrimentally damage the fur.
  3. Remove the soap with the same method, using only cold water.
  4. Remove any excess water with a sponge and then shake off to ensure that no water marks are left on the jacket. Should water marks appear please use a damp sponge and wipe over the affected area before once again removing excess water.
  5. Allow to dry by hanging the garment in a sufficiently ventilated area, far from direct sources of heat (radiators, etc.) and direct sunlight.

On suede, in certain instances, it is possible to remove light, soft stains with a rubber.
We recommend that you do not use wax on a leather jacket as the wax is produced for the wax cotton jackets alone.
Any of the following will damage or remove the proofing and may void the garmentā€™s warranty:

  • Do notĀ dry clean.
  • Do notĀ machine wash.
  • Do notĀ tumble dry.
  • Do notĀ use soap or detergent of any kind.
  • Do notĀ use solvents or bleach.
  • Do notĀ iron or starch.
  • Do notĀ force dry or expose to a direct flame.
  • Do notĀ expose to direct sunlight for a long period of time (such as rear car window).

We also recommend taking your jacket to a specialist reputable and professional Leather Care or cleaning company when needed, as this will make caring for it day-to-day much easier. Please contact our Customer Service for further advice on trusted service providers.

Storage
  • Do notĀ store your jacket in plastic, as the film may dry the fabric out.
  • Use wooden hangers or padded hangers to store your leather coats and jackets. This will help in keeping the shape of your garment.
  • Store the garment in a cool and dry place, avoiding humidity and direct sunlight as it will dry and discolor the leather.
  • Try to avoid folding your jacket.
Important Guide

Try to protect your jacket from heavy downfalls of rain where possible. Once leather gets wet the natural oils in the material leak to the surface. When the oil becomes hot it can evaporate, leaving you with a jacket thatā€™s dry and stiff. The finest way to prevent water from ruining your jacket is to give it some extra protection. A good leather conditioner will make your jacket more water resistant as well as keeping the leather strong and looking fresh. In the event that your leather garment does get wet, then allow it to dry naturally.

Product Warranty

Jenice Leather International takes great pride in the design and craftsmanship of all its products. We pursue to use only the finest materials and the highest manufacturing standards. We strive to make sure every item we sell is flawless.

In the unlikely event that a product does not match up to our high standards we will try our best to address the problem. Our jackets and footwear carry a 24 month guarantee from the date of purchase and our accessories carry a 12 month guarantee. This applies to items purchased in our standalone stores and online only.

If you find a defect with your item within the 24 month period after purchase, you have a further two months to inform us of the issue. Please contact our Customer Service team for further advise.

Upon alerting to us to an issue with your item you may be requested to email us images of the damaged article. We will then make an initial assessment and come back to you with the next course of action.

Our warranty does not cover damage caused by wear and tear or misuse of the item.

If your item has been purchased from one of our Authorised Partners we would advise that you reach out to them in the first instance. They will then make arrangements with the relevant team at J.L.I to resolve the issue.

Moral Policy

We visit factories regularly to ensure animals are treated as humanly as possible and that any dyes used do not leave a lasting impact on the environment.

  • Our leathers are soured from Europe and Africa. Each skin is certified by a document / technical sheet, presented at customs to certify the origin of each animal.
  • Our products are produced in different countries. We produce in Portugal, France, Romania and Italy. The leather used varies greatly on the product and each item is checked on arrival in our warehouse in France ā€“ this is a manual process. Any irregularities in stitching, colour, size, etc. are recorded and the product sent back to the factory. Should a factory have repeat instances where the products do not meet our quality standards, we would notify them in writing of our concerns and give them the opportunity to correct the issues. If the issues are not addressed, we switch production to another factory. All of our leather tanning is done in Italy by certified structures, as required by law.

We use a high quality down filling, made by 90% of duck down feathers and 10% of duck small feathers. The higher percentage of down feathers gives the garment its particular lightweight appearance but also ensures good performance in terms of warmth. The down filling is contained by a lightweight and specific down-bag, which prevents feathers from escaping. Our suppliers declare to comply with animal welfare policies and refrain from using materials originating from animals submitted to cruel and painful practices, such as live plucking, or an inhumane death
